How to upgrade to nbn® Fibre
Enter your address on our nbn® page and select a Fibre Upgrade plan if you’re eligible.
We’ll coordinate your upgrade and help you choose a time for an nbn® technician to visit your home.
Once your connection is up and running, you’ll automatically have access to your new Fibre plan.
Please note: From 16 April 2026, nbn may install a Premises Attachment Point instead of an outdoor nbn Utility Box. It works in the same way, it just looks like a pipe instead of a box.
What is nbn® Fibre?
How long will the connection take to be activated?
The duration for the installation and activation of your nbn® Fibre by nbn Co depends on your location and existing nbn® technology. nbn Co estimates either 19 or 25 business days for urban addresses and 24 or 29 business days for remote/regional addresses. In the meantime, if you’re not already an nbn® customer with us, we’ll set you up with an Interim nbn® Plan so you can get connected quicker. Once your nbn® Fibre upgrade is complete, we’ll automatically switch you over.
What does the nbn® Fibre installation process involve?
nbn Co will install new nbn® equipment inside and outside your premises to complete the upgrade. We will help arrange a time for the installation and update you via SMS.
Installation appointment (you or someone over 18 needs to be home for this appointment)
An nbn® installer will install the necessary equipment and will need access to both the interior and exterior of your property. This appointment generally takes 3 to 4 hours but may take longer for more complex connections. Depending on your specific installation, there may be some noisy works or temporary service interruptions during the installation.
In some cases, you will also need an initial appointment first. This will be determined by nbn Co.
Pre-installation visit (if needed, no one needs to be at home for this visit)
An nbn® installer will assess the exterior of your property to identify any potential obstacles and prepare for your installation appointment. This visit typically takes between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. However, more complex connections may require additional time.
How much does an nbn® Fibre upgrade cost?
Standard nbn® Fibre Upgrade installations are completed at no additional cost.
Additional costs may apply if you need a new modem or choose to upgrade to a high-speed plan along with your fibre upgrade. If you do not agree to installation in nbn’s recommended location, you may need to arrange your own cabling or engage a registered cabler at your own expense.
I live at a rental property, can I still upgrade to nbn® Fibre?
You’ll need the landlord’s permission to upgrade to nbn® Fibre at their premises as it may require work to the property to set up the connection, such as drilling into walls.
We’ve created a customisable letter that you can send to your landlord or property manager. Download the letter template.
Once you have approval, we can proceed with the upgrade.
Do I need a new modem for my nbn® Fibre upgrade?
nbn® Fibre connections require a compatible modem router, which both connects you to the internet and distributes the connection to other devices.
When do I need to apply by to get the nbn® Fibre upgrade?
There isn’t a specific deadline to apply. nbn Co aimed to enable around 10 million premises (or 90% of their fixed line network) to access ultrafast nbn® Fibre speeds by the end of 2025, with availability continuing to expand.
